At the Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant, the food is guaranteed to not cause pregnancy.
On one unforgettable three day stop over in Bangkok, Thailand, my mom, dad and I were exposed to the insanity of Bangkok nightlife. The night that stands out the most is when we visited the Silom and Surawong Roads where we dined at the Cabbages and Condoms restaurant, went shopping at the Patpong night market, visited a bar where we could "rent" women, then ended the night with a cocktail at a pub with a Thai Elvis impersonator.
I need a shrink, more so than a blog, to even begin to explain what it was like to see women with numbers stuck to their backs walk along the bar while I shared a pint of Tiger beer with my dad! And really, the Thai Elvis impersonator speaks for himself – he was quite fantastic.
The Patpong market is a must see for all Bangkok tourists as it’s the place for fake brand names, cheap souvenirs and endless Thai sarongs and carved wooden elephants. It’s loud, it’s pushy and you have to be prepared to bargain– really not that different from most Asian night markets. But the Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant really left an impression on me.
Where else in the world can you chow down on fantastic Thai food while admiring framed and famed condoms? At C&C, a portion of what you spend is donated to the Population and Community Development Association, a non-profit organization that supports birth control, environmental conservation, rural development and AIDS awareness. And why cabbages? They are the most common food in Northeast Thailand, they are everywhere and everybody uses them….. you get the idea. It gives a whole new meaning to Cabbage Patch Kid. In all seriousness, the food is really good, the service is friendly and it’s an experience you will never forget.
