Stonechurch Vineyards

Reuven and I took a trip down to the Niagara Peninsula a couple weeks ago and happened upon a wonderful little winery called Stonechurch. It is one of the older wineries in the Niagara region, established in 1990 and is situated in a secluded, quiet little corner of the Niagara wine region.

The sales person was extremely informative and took us through the methodology and style of the resident winemaker, Terence van Rooyen. She explained how South-African born van Rooyen's changed the style of Stonechurch wines upon his arrival in 2004. And what a job he did!

We tasted several different bottles and landed on the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. Stonechurch describes this $16 bottle like so “On the nose are aromas of black currant, blueberry and sweet cherry, with hints of peppery spices. This imminently drinkable wine is full bodied in taste with a smooth, long finish.” We simply described it as delicious. So tasty in fact, we drove right to the market, picked up some juicy steaks, situated ourselves in the backyard and polished off the award winning bottle in no time.

Stonechurch Vineyards is located at 1242 Irvine Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. It is approximately one and a half hours drive from Toronto. Take the time to follow the path around the vineyard and take in the wonderful smells and scenery, taste a few of the wines and travel home with a gem.
